Tight compositions are used to remove surrounding visual distractions - there is a lot going on in a busy boatyard. By careful selection of viewpoint Paul cuts out the clutter in order to create simple bold compositions which carry the essence of the subject.

There is playful juxtaposition of curved and straight lines, strong and muted colours, flat and textured surfaces and positive and negative shape.
